Marhaba!

This is my second time writing a blog about different places to visit or activities to do in or nearby Amman so if you didn’t see the first one, please make sure to check it out:

Name of First Blog: 12 Different Activities to Do Around Amman!

Here are 12 MORE different places, events, and activities I suggest doing around Amman to experience Jordanian Culture, meet other Jordanians, and/or practice your Arabic!

Hover your mouse over the photos to see the captions :)

Activity #1

Try a New Jordanian/Arab Dish Every Time! This is personally my favorite activity because it is so easy and fun. Write down all the traditional dishes like a bucket list to cross off. Here are some I got from class and crossed off as I did them, but there are more! Look each one up on the internet and ask your host family if it is something they usually make. If it is, it means you will get the opportunity to try it for free! Otherwise, ask where the best place is to buy the dish from and go with friends! Order multiple dishes and split them to try multiple at once! More dishes to add to the list that aren’t in the photo: قدرة – أوزي – ملفوف – مفركة بيض – مسبحة – ساندويس كعك – فلافل – شورما – فخار دجاج – فتة دجاج – سمبوسك - صيادية. Photo credit: Laura G. 2023.

Activity #2

Do a DIY Dessert Tour in Downtown! A group of friends and I looked up a lot of different dessert places and hit them up in one night. First, we bought Knafeh (كنافة) at Habiba Sweets and walked to Bakdash to top it with Arabic ice cream (بوظة عربي). Then, we walked around and ordered Harriseh (هريسه) and Warbat (وربات) from one shop, Awameh (عوامة) from another, and Halawet el Jibn (حلاوة الجبن) from another. The options are endless! Just look up dessert shops in the area, visit them, and order the things that look delicious! Ask for the name too so you know what you are eating. Also make sure to get only a couple of pieces of each and split them across the group to not eat too much sugar in one night! Or, you can plan to taste different desserts on different days (just like Activity #1). Photo credit: Laura G. 2023.

Activity #3

Go on a Hike with a Tour Group! You can find tours on Facebook as events or in posts (Example: Facebook Page called Ajloun Trips). Make sure that foreigners are allowed on the trips if the posts are all in Arabic and translated to English automatically by Facebook. This photo was from a hike in Wadi Al Hasa Al Safli (around 15 JOD). I have never done a hike like this before, walking through both shallow and really deep water at different points! Activity #4

Go to a Turkish or Moroccan Hammam! There are ones for women and ones for men separately. For women, I would recommend going to Alf Layla wa Layla. Prices run about 30-50 JD for cheapest to medium packages. It seems expensive, but when compared to a $200-300 price in America for the same package, it’s a great deal. Go with friends and get ready for an experience of a lifetime if you have never gone before! Ask host family members or local friends if they have gone before for advice and what to expect. Activity #5

Experience taking the BRT Bus! In downtown near the Jordan Museum is a bus station where you can buy a bus card for 1 JD and add funds to it. Scan the card at the front of the bus when you enter (each time you take the bus is about half a dinar) This bus has a designated space on the roads to skip traffic, and there is a bus stop right in front of Amideast! It’s great to use to get close to downtown for a cheap price! Download the Amman Bus app for more bus information and press the red button by the bus seats if you want the bus driver to stop at the next stop! Screenshot credit: Laura G. 2023.

Activity #6

Do an Escape Room with friends at Escape the Room (either in Abdoun or Al Sweifieh). It runs about 14-17 JOD per person depending on how big your group is. It was difficult, but it was cheaper than American escape rooms, just as fun, and a nice experience to bond with peers! Photo credit: Laura G. 2023.

Activity #7

Go shopping for clothes at the some outlet stores! If you don’t want used clothes from Souq al-Jumma for really cheap (1-3 JOD per clothing item) or really expensive clothes from the malls, then outlets might be a good middle option for you! Try checking out Hekaih Out Let store on Khalil As-Salem Street and the shops around it for clothes at an affordable price. There is also a nice juice place, Juice Afandi, to get drinks after shopping (see the photo)! Photo credit: Running Amman, 2023.

Activity #8

Visit the City of As-Salt! To get there, one option is to take the BRT Bus all the way to Sweileh, and then take a coaster from there to As-Salt. It’s best to go with a local Jordanian friend so you don’t get lost. You can also take an Uber and go with friends to split the cost (but I’m not sure if there are Ubers there to take you back). Always ask for advice for the best ways to get somewhere. Once there, you can visit the Abu Jaber Museum, Al Khader Church, Hammam Street (in the photo), Salt Turk Sehitligi, etc. There are also paths to follow to lead you to different attractions. I personally didn’t love As-Salt very much, but I would still recommend checking it out (since it was the old capital before Amman). Photo credit: Laura G. 2023.

Activity #9

Visit Darat Al-Funun! This historical place holds some ruins and a library to check out if you are in downtown. There is also a second part across from it that you can enter and check out! Photo credit: Laura G. 2023.

Activity #10

Visit The Old Signs Museum and Duke’s Diwan Museum in Downtown. These two museums are both free! I personally felt that Duke’s Diwan (the oldest building/home in downtown) was a bit boring compared to the cool, vintage signs in the first museum, but they are both worth checking out, maybe in the same day! Activity #11

Check out Sweifieh Village. This small area has a great boba place and tons of nice cafes to sit at, relax, and chat with friends. It’s a nice place to explore if you have time! Photo credit: Laura G. 2023.

Activity #12

Watch Arabic Movies for free?! Check out The Royal Film Commission of Jordan, which is like a library but with DVDs instead of books! Most of the films are already downloaded to the computers so you can watch movies for free directly on the computers there. There are movies from all over the world! Ask for a tour and return for free movies every time :) Photo credit: Laura G. 2023.
