"Sketching Jordan and Morocco" by Claire Morris

"Sketching Jordan and Morocco" by Claire Morris

One of my favorite things to do in my downtime is to draw.  I picked up a set of acrylic markers at my local art store in Amman and spent many hours with my host mom drawing over cups of coffee. After relocating to Rabat, I have continued with this habit, often drawing whatever I see around me.

Below I’ve added two of my sketches of my favorite views.  One from Jordan and one from Morocco.

This was my view from my seat in class everyday in Amman. The windows looked out across the street and every once in a while you could see shepherds who brought their sheep and goats to graze between the buildings on the hill. I loved watching them and always loved the contrast of sheep grazing in a field next to the UNHCR building. Photo credit: Morris, 2026.

This is my favorite place to go and just sit for a while. It’s along the Rabat/Oudayas beach and is quite peaceful in the afternoons. You can sit with the Kasbah to your back and watch fishing boats and surfers come and go. During the warmer months the beaches are very crowded and can make for great people watching too! Photo credit: Morris, 2026.

Claire is a student at the University of Richmond, and studying abroad in Spring 2026 on Amideast’s Area and Arabic Language Study Program in Amman, Jordan and Rabat, Morocco.
