"Tastes of Morocco" by Marley Craine
As I reflect on the past few months of my semester in Morocco, I fondly think about food as one of the greatest highlights. Here's a list of some of my favorite things I've eaten so far!
Lunch and Goat Cheese in Fes
With Amideast, we took a trip to Fes and stopped at a small farm for lunch on the way. We tasted different kinds of goat cheese and had a delicious lunch!
A Moroccan Breakfast in Fes
Here is a traditional Moroccan breakfast. This was at our hostel in Marrakech, but it's very similar to what I eat nearly every day in my host home. Orange juice, fruit, eggs, and bread, bread, bread! This one came with amlou, a delicious sweet almond butter.
Ice Cream!
In the early months, it was necessary to cool down once and a while at a decadent ice cream place in Agdal, right down the street from Amideast.
Birthday Treats
I turned 21 in early October and my roommate surprised me with all my favorite things to eat for breakfast back home: avocado toast, pomegranate, and orange juice! After class later that day, I was met with a stunning ice cream cake and my favorite soda ever, Poms.
Tanja
Tanja is a special variation of tagine and is Marrakech's famous dish. Tanja is cooked slowly over smoldering ashes, while tagine is cooked over a charcoal or wood fire (or just on the stovetop!). It was delicious and reminded us of barbecue!
Harira
Harira is a delicious chickpea soup served with dates, sweet breads and candies, and a squeeze of lemon juice. This soup is traditionally eaten in the evening to break the Ramadan fast.
Couscous
An article about Moroccan food wouldn't be complete without couscous, eaten every Friday for lunch. This picture was taken on our very first Friday in Rabat, when we all ate our first couscous at Amideast. B'Saha!
