This past weekend, the Amideast group took their first program excursion to the valley of Zaouiat Ahansal in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco!

On our first full day, we did a walking tour (in the rain) and saw the beautiful village we were staying in. Photo credit: Janicki, 2024.

This was the view of the mountains from the porch of the guest house we were staying in. The Sheik of the valley graciously hosted us! Photo credit: Janicki, 2024.

The Amideast group split up into four groups to spend time with and teach the local kids some English with fun activities. This is all of us outside of their school. Photo credit: Teacher from local school, 2024.

I took this photo on our way to the school and these two girls were later in my first group on how to brush your teeth. They were so excited! Photo credit: Janicki, 2024.

Another activity that we did was take a walk over to a different village within the Zaouiat Ahansal Valley. This is a photo of the Amazigh flag, the flag of the people indigenous to Morocco. Photo credit: Janicki, 2024.

While on our hike, a local group of boys asked if we wanted to join in their soccer game. It started as the Amideast group versus the locals, but we quickly had to merge and make new teams. They were much better than us! Photo credit: Kari Malatak, 2024.

On our last night, we were able to dress up in traditional Moroccan clothes and listen to a local Amazigh band play music for us. It was filled with much dancing and getting to know some of the local people we spent the weekend with better. Photo credit: Haime, 2024.

Molly Janicki is a student at American University and is studying abroad on the Amideast Area and Arabic Studies Program in Rabat, Morocco this spring 2024.
