"Honest Review of the Required Sightseeing in Jordan: A Poem" by Jack Mullen

"Honest Review of the Required Sightseeing in Jordan: A Poem" by Jack Mullen

Banner photo: Just one of many of the breathtakingly solitary views found in Wadi Rum. There were more people scattered around Wadi Rum than I had thought there would be, but the desert is such a beautiful place that allows each person more than enough space to exist. Just be sure to repay this kindness through respectful treatment of the desert so as to maintain it for the Bedouin who live there. Photo credit: Mullen, 2023.

Human advertisements, but really it is just truly good intentions

Petra, crowded expensive but underneath it all is still the honest friendliness of the Jordanian people,

            concentrated nexus of tourists

Don't expect to use your Arabic here

You are a tourist, they won't let you speak Arabic

A type of hospitality

Wadi Rum, beautiful vast friendly Bedouin hospitality new family kindness enthusiasm friendship

vast area of travelers

Use your Arabic here

You become family, they will give you a job

The kindest and most genuine hospitality

Dead Sea, a really cool experience.

Downtown,

Unguided browsing: relentless assault of more human advertisements, polite, but exhausting, completely new shopping experience

Intentional destination: how it should be experienced, you become a local, you are there because you have business there, it is true, everyone has business there

Balance

You should try your Arabic whenever possible

Endless flow of new friends

Jordan

Petra has been completely taken over by vendors and salesmen (and saleswomen!) trying to sell you things. The enormous carvings are impressive, but the bustling and loud atmosphere is unavoidable. So despite its countless recommendations and the immense pride of the Jordanian people in it, I would have to say if there was any landmark to skip on your travels if you are pressed for time, I would recommend skipping Petra in favor of Wadi Rum.
