Zaouiat Ahansal is a small village made up of many permanent residents, and many semi-nomads. Semi-nomads take their animals up into the mountains during the warm months, returning in the cold season to rest and recuperate. The village has minimal infrastructure; however, people look after one another.
The valley below the dam on the way to Zaouiat Ahansal. This valley exposed the extent of the drought in Morocco. The dam was massive compared to the water-levels flowing by, however the reservoir in the mountains made for a gorgeous photo.
The village of Zaouiat Ahansal receives water from the river off the mountains. There is an NGO that works to ensure that everyone receives running water in their homes. Goals for the future include integrating a system for wastewater.
Overall, the trip to Zaouiat Ahansal was incredible! I learned a lot about what life in rural Morocco looks like and about the Amazigh culture!
